The Climate Corridor Initiative (CCI) has selected four locations where projects are initiated to improve natural capital, biodiversity and strengthen livelihoods of local communities.
CCI is a joint climate initiative started in 2020 by a consortium consisting of the Nature Conservation Center of the American University of Beirut, the Ministry of Agriculture of Jordan, Al Balqa Applied University and Menaqua Ltd. The purpose of the initiative is to implement land restoration activities in Lebanon and Jordan using our knowledge on irrigation techniques, water and soil conditions for afforestation and agroforestry.
The consortium has selected four project locations; two in Jordan and two locations in Lebanon. These locations were inspected and analyzed in order to determine the methods and techniques required to achieve successful planting for each site. The selection of the sites depends on the local biophysical conditions: levels of land degradation, water availability, soil, climate, and socio-economic conditions.
Current situation for the selected locations:
• Soaring temperatures, drought and desertification offer an imminent threat to these countries’ forest reserves.
• Forests are vulnerable and easily taken for granted.
Future situation for the selected locations:
• CCI will mitigate the dangers posed to forests by locally implementing comprehensive land restoration programs. Eventually, this will lead to landscapes restored into a productive ecosystem.
• The Climate Corridor Initiative (CCI) will optimize our impact by delivering the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), and generate carbon offsets as well as local produce.
