Three Pilot Projects Lebanon
In Lebanon, MENAQUA worked in partnership with the Nature Conservation Center of AUB (The American University in Beirut) to plant 1200 (Cherry, Almond, Pyrus syriaca, Rhus coriaria, and Pistachia palaestina) trees using the Cocoon technology in three locations. Two of these locations, Ras Baalbek and Jabal Moussa are forestry sites; the third one is an agro site located in Arsal.
MENAQUA and the AUB/NCC aim to scientifically study, communicate, and engage key agroforestry stakeholders in the performance of the Cocoon technology. This Dutch planting technology will provide several benefits and another chance for the dry dead soils to revive. These benefits are water savings, cost reduction, expansion of the customary planting season, and improve the survival-rate of trees in agroforestry initiatives across Lebanon and the MENA region Cocoon technology.
Project objectives
- Conduct scientific testing with and for key stakeholders on the capacity and quality of the Cocoon technology;
- Improve agroforestry practices;
- Reduce agroforestry planting costs; which will ultimately build climate-change resilience in Lebanon.
Project Execution
- The planting process started with a scoping mission to examine surroundings and take soil samples;
- Three sites were selected according to the soil samples results and the expected weather conditions;
- The project started in May 2019 with a spring planting (start of the dry season) and continued with the fall planting in December 2019 (2 months before start of the rain season).
